AMD has finally announced their update to the B450 chipset motherboards with the all new the B550 chipset – which finally brings PCIe 4.0 support to the entry-level range of AMD motherboards. It’s not just the higher-end X570 motherboards that support the blazing fast PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs, anymore.
After months of hints and leaks about this upcoming chipset, AMD has confirmed that B550 motherboards will be launching June 16th, 2020.
Alongside this launch also comes two new entry-level, Ryzen 3-series processors aimed at taking on the new 10th-gen Intel Core i3 processors – the Ryzen 3 3300X and Ryzen 3 3100. Both of these will be supported by the new B550 chipset.
Which AMD processors are compatible with B550 motherboards?
It’s important to note that the new B550 chipset won’t be compatible with all previous generation AMD processors, such as the 1st generation and 2nd generation Ryzen processors – though the Ryzen 3000 / Zen 2 processors and newer will be compatible.
Also note, older processors won’t support PCIe 4.0, therefore, won’t be able to reap the benefits of choosing a B550 motherboard over a B450 or X470 chipset motherboard, per se.
